Oil Sands, Greenhouse Gases, and US Oil Supply: Getting the Numbers Right September 7, 2010
Evolving policy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions poses a new challenge for all sources of hydrocarbon supply, but particularly for the oil sands due to their higher-than-average GHG intensity. How does the carbon intensity of oil sands compare to other sources of US oil supply? What are the potential implications of life-cycle–based regulation on petroleum fuels, including those produced from oil sands?

LNG Trade Routes July 20, 2010
The number of liquefied natural gas trade routes continues to grow as more suppliers and more buyers enter the game. The attached Google Earth file allows users to quickly see how that trade has been, and how it is going to evolve. IHS CERA will periodically add more historical trade routes as well as IHS CERA outlooks in this format.

Global Steam Coal Market Update: Falling Freight Rates Signal a Step Change July 6, 2010
Dry bulk freight rates are on the brink of a major slowdown, as the rate of fleet growth is set to outstrip prospective increases in demand to a massive degree. The effects of this on the global steam coal market will be to narrow the differentials between short-haul and long-haul ocean freight costs, making the prospects for increased movements of steam coal from the Atlantic Basin to Asia Pacific much better than they have been since the early 2000s.

Diversification of Supply Brings New Dynamics to China's Energy Markets June 9, 2010
The rapid energy demand recovery accompanying China’s economic rebound has prompted energy producers to seek out new supply resources—from new geographic locations (in the case of coal and natural gas) or based on new technologies (in the case of power)—which are creating unprecedented dynamics in the energy sector that will require systemic adjustments.

Russia's Second Baltic Pipeline and Terminal: More than Just an Oil Export Project April 7, 2010
Russia is investing in significant expansion of its Baltic area crude and refined product export infrastructure. The latest project reflects a continuing incentive to diversify export options, particularly so as to reduce dependence on Belarusian transit.

Low-carbon Fuel Standards: A New Way to Regulate the Transportation Sector March 25, 2010
Low-carbon fuel standards requiring a reduction in the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of transportation fuels are a new way to regulate the transportation sector. California introduced such a standard in January 2010 and other jurisdictions are considering similar standards. Development of commercial-scale advanced biofuels and consumer acceptance of these fuels are crucial to compliance.

US Congress Focuses on Climate Policy: IHS CERA Assessment of Transformative GHG Targets October 9, 2009
The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (HR 2454), which passed the US House of Representatives in June 2009, and the US Senate’s draft introduced in September 2009 seek to transform the US energy sector to a low-carbon infrastructure. IHS CERA analyzed HR 2454 to determine the effects on the US energy sector, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and energy prices.

Peak Oil Demand in the Developed World: It's Here September 29, 2009
Demand for oil in the developed world has peaked. Demographic and socioceconomic changes, as well as improvements to transportation-sector efficiency and fuel substitution, will prevent long-term OECD demand growth.
